"Stress-Free Christmas Decorating Strategies"

As with any decorating project, make a plan. If you base your plan on a theme or a color palette, shopping for your holiday decorations will be easier and your home will have a unified look that flows from room to room.

A small collection of snowmen, angels or reindeer can evolve into a theme for your holiday décor. Nature-inspired Williamsburg and Lodge themes are current and eco-friendly. Old World Christmas themes blend well with traditional homes. For a departure from the typical red and green, take direction from your home’s paint and fabric colors. If your home has warm colors, chose gold and red rather than icy white and silver. Your result will be a harmonious décor. For a warm and richly welcoming décor pair elegant jewel toned purple, teal and green with frosted or beaded fruit. Bronze, gold and brown will compliment a rustic, earthy décor. White and cream blend well with any color or décor and will take you right into the New Year. Limit your color scheme to two or three colors for a sophisticated, elegant look.

Once you have selected your Holiday theme or color palette, walk through your home with a digital camera and tape measure in hand and take photos and measurements of anything you might include in your décor. Your fireplace, dining room table, entry hall chest, cocktail table and kitchen island are great starting points. A bedroom dresser or bathroom sink corner can transform your master and guest suites into festive retreats. A small tabletop tree will be a whimsical addition to a child’s bedroom. Pamper your guests by continuing your holiday décor into your powder room. To round out your holiday look, inventory your existing accessories, china, glassware, linens and candles. Look to your garden or kitchen to add a touch of nature in your favorite bowl or vase.

When you shop for your decorations, carry the photos and measurements you’ve taken of your existing accessories and locations you have selected to include in your holiday décor. Remember your plan and do not be lured by other themes and colors. To give your room a designer look, your shopping list should include gift wrap and trims that compliment your holiday theme. After you have transformed your home from everyday to festive and welcoming, take photos of your holiday décor so that next year’s decorating will be stress-free.
